Letter of the Month!!!
... real letters culled from the swollen mail sacks of
the Smugglers ...
Since Smuggler Nick is honeymooning with his bride in Hawaii this month,
we thought it was fitting that we received this update from our good friend,
Hi-Fives lead singer John Denery. John and his wife Judy moved to the island
paradise of Hawaii a few months ago, and just sent in this amazing report of
life on the islands.
Aloha Smugglers!
Having a wonderful time here in Hawaii. I’ve had some not so good and
some pretty entertaining jobs over here. The not so good one was at a
economy hotel in Waikiki that I believe I mentioned to you. The assistant
manager made it a habit to drive her oxygen tank on wheels over my toes
every chance she had. I asked for a leave of absence for two weeks to be an
extra in John Woo’s new movie, Windtalkers, which was being filmed here in
Oahu starring Nicholas Cage. I play, along
with 6 hundred and ninety nine talented actors, a private in World War Two.
My big scene is when I, along with my 699 good friends, invade Saipan with
rubber guns. Teaching us ‘Gomer Piles’ to act like actual Marines were real
life ‘Sargent Slaters’ who unfortunately forgot that we were civilians that
didn’t have to put up with their crap. But I never minded their shouting
because I needed someone to make sure I didn’t run over one of 280 bombs
that were set for detonation during the final shoot. We had ten hours worth
of practice runs making sure everyone’s route was safe. Which leads me to my
story. On the final practice run, as I curved in and out of fox holes and
explosions, I noticed to my right a private who looked like he had no idea
what he was doing. I was kind of worried he might hurt himself so I as we
ran side by side I tried to give him a comforting smile and said, "If you’re
unsure just follow my back, I’ll get you there safe." "Thanks", he replied.
We ran side by side for a bit but then he darted to the right. As I neared
the enemy I fell into prone position behind a palm tree and began firing my
rubber gun. It suddenly dawned on me that I had seen that guy’s face before.
I turned my head to the right and sure enough, shooting down the enemy with
me was Christian Slater.
I look forward to your visits to the Islands - Aloha,
John Denery,
The Hi-Fives
Grant’s postscript: John currently works for Hawaii.com, and lives in
the hills of Honolulu with his wife Judy. It’s warm and sunny all year and
they are loving every minute of it. And one last thing, John is still a
member of the Hi-Fives! They will live to rock ‘n’ roll again!
